"Overjoyed… We Can't Believe He's Really Here" — an Irish Couple Shares Their Surrogacy Journey With WCOB

In spring 2021, Michelle and Dermot Fahy successfully finished their surrogacy journey at the World Center of Baby by welcoming their long-awaited baby boy, Joey. They were kind enough to share their story with other Intended Parents.

Before the Surrogacy Journey: How It All Started

Michelle and Dermot have been together for 11 years. They’ve met at a mutual friend’s wedding. As they say, “Weddings make Weddings,” so the couple got married in 2015 and started trying for a child naturally to expand their family. After 10 months of trying, nothing worked, and Michelle began asking specialists what might cause it.

Michelle: The gynecologist did a scan and saw a cyst, and when I went in 3 weeks later to get the cyst removed, she did what we call a Laparoscopy and dye test, and my tubes were blocked. So pregnancy was never going to happen naturally for us.

Over the following 6 years, the Fahy family went through 9 rounds of IVF, three operations, and lost 4 babies. “Mentally, emotionally, financially, we could not put more into IVF, so there was no guarantee that it was ever going to work, and no matter what we did, it did not work,” says Michelle. Eventually, their failures in IVF led the Fahys to surrogacy.

Before her last transfer, Michelle has already started looking for surrogacy options. So she started surfing through Irish support groups in search of a piece of advice. She knew that Ukraine was the top option for the easy exit process, and it was closer than America and way more affordable. Michelle requested surrogacy agency options, and the World Center of Baby popped out as one of the answers. She chose the WCOB due to its all-inclusive package, which stood for an easy journey for them.

Michelle: I wanted it to be a very stress-free journey, so, for me, even though you may pay a little bit extra, everything was included. You didn’t have to find your own accommodation; you didn’t have to go arrange your own independent lawyer for your own surrogate and things like that.

Delivery Day and Reflections

Delivery Day and Reflections

The baby Joey was ahead of his aspiring parents and came a day before the Fahys came to Kyiv to welcome him. During the delivery day, the World Center of Baby IP’s coordinator updated Michelle and Dermot throughout the whole process by texting, calling, and sending photos when the little one eventually was welcomed to the world. So, happy parents already knew their baby boy even before they have met him personally. Michelle recalls, before they came over, “Joey couldn’t be in any better hands than he was with our surrogate.”

By the time when all the paperwork was done and the Fahys could come home, to Ireland, in an enlarged family, they’ve enjoyed Kyiv sightseeing. They admit that it’s a beautiful city to welcome your bundle of joy.

Surrogacy Tips for Intended Parents

Surrogacy Tips for Intended Parents

Although every surrogacy journey is unique, there are some valuable tips for parents-to-be. As Michelle puts it herself: «Even though you wanted it SO much, you have to be prepared for the knockbacks and to find the courage to go again and go again. But when you have a guarantee package as we had at the World Center of Baby, it didn’t matter how many times it took.»

Through their challenging but successful path to parenthood, Michelle and Dermot advise above all:

  • educate yourself
  • be prepared for coming over here for the whole process
  • talk to people who have had different experiences

The World Center of Baby would like to thank Michelle and Dermot for taking the time to share their story with us. Being a part of their family-building process was an absolute honour!
